“What a mystery,” wrote Horatius Bonar, “the soul and eternity of one man depends upon the voice of another.”
Romans 10:14 asks how they who believe in Christ can believe if they have not heard of Him, and how they can hear of Him without a preacher?
May we consider the ways the Savior “preached”. It may not have always been through words. If He truly knew the needs of each individual He ministered unto, then He would’ve known that some were not prepared to hear sermons.
If we are to minister like the Savior, we must have the spiritual sensitivity to see that not everyone needs to be taught the doctrine. Rather, they might just need a helping hand… a shoulder to lean on… an understanding opinion to agree with… or a companion to cure their loneliness. It might be your special calling to mourn with those that mourn, and comfort those who stand in need of comfort.
So if I were to make one addition to Brother Horatius’ thought, I would say that the soul and eternity of one man depends upon the voice and friendship of another.
For in which way does the Lord Christ present Himself to you, Preacher or Friend?
